Jesus calls Levy, a tax collector, in spite of his societal background. God's call to us is not deserved, but it is a gift of his grace. He calls us too in the moment of our weakness, sin and struggle. Jesus meets us where we are and in the state that he finds us. God mercy comes first before our response. Dining with sinners as in today's Gospel is a paradigm of grace, where God transforms the Eucharistic table into an act of welcome, healing and communion with God. Jesus invites us to build a society of communion and bridges instead of a society of exclusion and walls or barriers. This process can only begin with each individual discovering God's mercy at work in our personal life, and deciding to respond by showing the same mercy to our brothers and sisters in our community.
Jesus, I trust in you
