Tuesday of the third week of Easter. Acts 7:51-8:1; John 6:30-35.

Focus on Jesus and not on the sign

Today's readings invite each of us to focus on Christ whom the signs of mana are pointing at. The mana was not the end, but Christ, who is living bread in the Eucharist. We should be able to seek the Giver more than the gift. When our prayers go unanswered or signs do not appear, it is precisely in those moments that faith matures. Like the psalmist and Stephen, we learn to entrust our spirit into God's hands, finding joy not in what we see, but in Whom we trust. Seeking Christ Himself, rather than merely His signs, is the mark of a mature and authentic faith.

Lord, into your hand, I command my spirit.

The works of God

“What can we do to accomplish the works of God?” Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent.” The primary action God requires from us is to have faith in Jesus Christ, his Son Whom he sent to redeem us. To believe is not just a simple mental assent but a deep, personal trust and reliance on Jesus. Faith in Christ is the foundation of our relationship with God and the basis for salvation. "And without faith, it is impossible to please God because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him."(Hebrews 11:6)

Saturday of the 2nd week of Easter. John 14:6-14. Philip and James, Apostles.

This feast reminds us that our true satisfaction does not depend on material things, money, hedonistic life or our fame and power, but true satisfaction is having Jesus in our life. “Show us the Father and we shall be satisfied”, Philip says to Jesus. Indeed, Jesus is our satisfaction and the true rest of our soul. Only the creator of our soul can give us true fulfilment. Our daily life must become a restless search for God. “Lord you are my God. For you my heart is thirsting. (Ps 62:1). Anyone who searches for Jesus, will find him and he will give them eternal life.

Be a blessing for others

We remember today St Athanasius, “the Father of othodoxy” as he worked so hard to counter heresies in the early Church. As a young deacon, at the Council of Nicaea, Athanasius helped set down the true teaching of the Church that Jesus Christ is true God and true man. The multiplication of loaves in today’s gospel, for St. Athanasius clearly foreshadows the Eucharist, i.e., the Holy Communion. Through the eucharist, Jesus offers eternal life and becomes himself the "true bread from heaven", that satisfies the hunger of the human heart. May we like Jesus become the bread for the life of others. Like the young boy in the gospel, we are invited to conquer the sin of greed and become a blessing for others.

Jesus, I trust in you!

Thursday, May 1, St. Joseph, the Worker. John 3:31-36

May 1, 2025 Emily Arthur

Jesus came to teach about the things above. God wants us to set our eyes to heavenly things. Joseph understood this, and he did not allow his earthly ambitions to abstract the plan of God. Joseph obeyed God's word. Therefore, God blessed him with the gift of eternal life. The Apostles in the first reading prefer to die rather than to disobey God. May our lives be in constant obedience to God's will as St. Joseph's did. Scriptures in Romans 10:11 remind us that "those who trust in the Lord will never be put to shame." Obedience is truly the mark of the heavenly wisdom.
St. Joseph patron of workers, pray for us!

Jesus, I trust in you.

Love that conquers darkness

Love is the synthesis of the Gospel. The sacrificial love of God for all mankind is unconditional, and it is expressed in the death of Jesus. All we need is to open our hearts to God's love. Accepting Christ and believing in him opens for us the door of salvation that no power of darkness can shut again. By following Christ's way of life, we overcome the darkness of this world. Let's live as children love and the light of Christ will shine in the world.

Take my yoke !

Jesus' death and resurrection have obtained for us a very special grace. Our salvation is no more based on any of our merit, or worldly wisdom, or any works of the law but on our trust and faith in Jesus. For this very reason, we can have rest from all the heaviness and burdens of our sins. Paul concludes this by saying, "For you have been saved through faith, that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest any should boast." (Ephesians 2:4)

Born from above.

The resurrection is all about a new life. In this dialogue with Nicodemus, Jesus uses the metaphor "being born from above" to indicate the process of a spiritual rebirth and transformation that begins at baptism. Being born from above refers to a spiritual change: from the state of death to a new life in God's kingdom. Empowered by God's grace and the Holy Spirit, Christians are invited to live a new life through their change of lifestyle, that is living as a new creation (2Corinthians 5:17).

Go into the world and preach the Gospel

Today, Jesus commissions his disciples to “go into the whole world and proclaim the Gospel to every creature.” Evangelization is the mission of the Church. We are all called to witness to the risen Christ. Every passionate Christian must bring other people to Christ just like the four people who lowered the paralytic through the roof to get him to Jesus. In spite of the various obstacles, we are invited to use whatever means possible to win souls to Jesus.

Luke 24: 35-38

After the meeting with the women, the 11 apostles and the two disciples of Emmaeus, Jesus shows his wounds as a power to heal and to bring peace. We, too, like Jesus, have many wounds. Bring your wounds to Jesus, and you will find healing. By proclaiming the Gospel of repentance and love, we bring healing and peace; by forgiving others, we give healing, and we are healed. By letting go of our resentments, we are healed, and we are at peace!
Like Jesus, may we grow to become wounded healers!

Wednesday within the Octave of Easter. Luke 21:13-31

The two disciples felt disappointed, frustrated, discouraged, and helpless as they set on their journey to Emmaeus. The death of Jesus, the "supposed to Messiah," looks to them as a failure. There are many occasions when we have felt like God has failed us or let us down. Emmaeus teaches us that God never fails. God is not yet finish with us. In our times of disappointments, God journeys with us. He is near to the broken hearted. Faith in the name of Jesus is a power that changes our life. May we allow God to heal our frustrations and disappointment by finding our strength from the Scriptures and the Eucharist. No one finds the rainbow by looking down. Always lift up your head. Always have faith that Jesus is walking with us on our roads of life.

Jesus is our loving friend

While we all know that it is very difficult to deal with the loss of a loved one, it is also important for us not to dwell too much on sadness, grief, and sorrow. Mary Magdelene focus was on the sadness of her Master's death and not on the hope of the resurrection. In such conditions, she could not recognize the risen Christ. Jesus may also remain a gardener if we remain staked in our discouragement, sufferings, and pains. When we shift from hopelessness and desperation, we begin to see and to talk to the risen Christ as our loving friend and, not as the gardener.

Go to Galilee

"Do not be afraid.
Go tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me." These words of Jesus to Mary Magdelene and the other Mary are also the instruction that, He the risen Christ, gives to the universal Church today. Jesus wants us fearlessly to go the poorest, the less privileged, the abandoned to proclaim his message of love.
May the spirit of the risen Lord strengthen us for the proclamation of the Gospel.

He is risen, alleluia!

Good Friday Reflection

April 18, 2025 Emily Arthur

AT THE FOOT OF THE CROSS

A place of pain for love

Today’s celebration revolves around the cross, not a mere sign of devotion but as the instrument of mercy, forgiveness and salvation. Pope Francis ceaselessly reminds us that,

"The God of mercy; he does not tire of forgiving. We are the ones who tire in asking for forgiveness, but he does not tire."

The cross manifests God’s love for us and Jesus extends visibly that love through pains, suffering, his passion and death. Isaiah tells us that,

"By his stripes, we are healed" (Isaiah 53:5)

A place of hope in spite of our weakness

We are invited throughout the world today to stand at the foot of the cross. We all know how difficult and even impossible to make all things no matter how best our intentions could be. Paul himself has summed this up in these terms:

“I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.” (Romans 7:15).

Paul clearly indicates the situation of our human condition. We are invited to the foot of the cross to learn how to surrender our weakness and frailty to the one who strengthens us. Give thanks to the Cross: for as he endured the suffering, we realize the possibility of our own salvation.

A place of forgiveness and restoration

We came to lay down all the

violence committed against the innocents and which are being committed against God, the church, and our world. It is an opportunity to bring at the foot of the cross, all weapons of human destruction and to embrace justice, love and peace that Christ offers us:

“Father forgive them for they do not know what they are doing” (Luke 23:34).

So Jesus not only loves us but he hung on the cross for each and everyone of us to be forgiven and reconciled. Paul while writing the Colossians says that Jesus reconciled all things on earth and in heaven by making peace through his blood he shed on the cross. (Cf. Col.1:20). Let each one of us, therefore, come forward on this Good Friday to stand at the foot of the cross with confidence and trust. On the cross, Jesus, is our ransom; He is a suffering Servant, who is ready to take away our sins, our own bruises, our wounds, our infirmities. Let’s come at the foot to be healed, consoled and transformed. Every time we embrace the cross, we acknowledge our new beginning that already anticipates our final entrance with him in heaven:

“Today, you will be with me in Paradise” (Luke 23:43).

As Mary, the Mother of the Lord is given to us as we stand with her at the foot of the cross, may we make sure not to leave her behind when we go back home. “Woman behold your son” and then to the disciple: “Behold your mother” (John 25-27)

For the sake of his sorrowful passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world!

Jesus, I trust in you!
